Where to start?

Our eworkbook offers a way for people to get started gently on career related thinking and career planning in general.

It takes 2 hours to read - longer if the person is able and willing to engage with the exercises.

There is no time limit and there is feedback when it is complete.

The Career Workbook however takes up to 8 hours over two weeks as part of the Career Review. It is often just too demanding for someone who is suffering from burnout, depression or anxiety.

Psychiatry

The interface between career guidance and psychiatry is a challenging one.

At what point may a career make an existing illness worse?
At what stage does a career mismatch or unreasonable work demands make a person ill?
And when should a person return to work after a period of mental illness ?

These are questions that are not always straightforward to answer.

Interaction between the three expert areas can provide a more effective team approach ...a three pronged approach gaining better outcome.

Occupational Health

When a clinician is ill who do they go to?
The first step might be their GP. However, if there are repercussions within the workplace relating to this illness - a visit to occupational health might be more appropriate or an additional step.

The trouble is - clinicians often don't like to admit they are ill or they don't want to let the side down by going off sick.

Sometimes it is easier to admit that one is not happy at work or with ones career. Thus seeking independent and confidential career guidance might be a first step in resolving a health issue - whether or not it is caused by or made worse by work.

Career guidance

This is a part of medical education yet there are inevitable elements of occupational health, life coaching, mindfulness and psychoanalysis too.

There are times when professionals engage with our services yet are either on medication for mental ill health or should be...a definite psychiatric emphasis.

There are times when ceasing work for a period of time is the only way in which effective career guidance can take place.

Then there are sometimes delicate issues as to when a person would best return to work and at what pace. Both of these are strongly occupational health related.

How can we help?

Free confidential case discussions
At times there are complex issues relating to career choice, career planning and return to work and a preliminary input from us can often make the clinical situation clearer with regard to work issues. We are happy for our leaflet to be handed to both clinical and non clinical personnel where there are significant work related challenges that are affecting recovery.

Training in career guidance skills as they relate to the roles of psychiatry and occupational health
During consultations the issue of work comes up regularly for both specialties. How and when to broach career issues, what advice to give regarding returning to work and how to make changes at the workplace all interface with career guidance. So gaining some basic principles of career planning and guidance in your skills base will aid your clinical work.

Career planning support for psychiatrists and occupational health physicians
There is no better way to inherently understand the benefits of independent career guidance for a career than to undergo it yourself.
