Integrating career guidance into medicineThere is an increasing need for advanced skills in career guidance and career management within medicine. This is not just for those providing career support to other but also for those who are seeking to take more responsibility for managing and forging their own careers. In addition medical students regularly indicate to us that they would like more career support and we see GP partners and consultants for careers guidance - so the need is across the board, all ages, all specialities. We feel strongly at Medical Forum that the way to spearhead better career guidance to all doctors is for it to become fully integrated within the medical education system. Currently it is often more of a bolt on addition or afterthought which may or may not be easily accessible due to patchy provision and a general lack of training in career guidance skills amongst those who are offering it and perhaps some unrealistic expectations of those seeking it. The outcome of an overall concerted and integrated approach to inculcating and encouraging good career guidance practices is generally one of two things A) sometimes the individual can then be empowered to solve their own career concerns - given the right tools and infrastructure for doing so B) even if they can't solve their own career support needs - if they have done some preparation work on their own their ability to access the right support and to discuss their needs more assertively and clearly will be greatly enhanced (thus making the job of giving career guidance to them more effective and focused) If you would like to read more about the challenges of integrating career guidance into medical training please visit our documents section in the library to read a copy of our discussion document "Elevating and delegating career guidance" |
