T :  Telematics and telemedicine

This career area is a subsection of medical informatics.

Medical telematics or health care telematics relates to the interface between the delivery of healthcare, computer technology and telephony. It is sometimes hard to know where one of these three elements stops and another begins.

Telemedicine on the other hand at it's broadest definition is  "medical activities that occur at a distance" - including medical education and treatments, patient monitoring etc.

Teleconsulting uses  phone, colour one way video, two way video with audio, data links in monitoring patients in their own home or in remote locations such as Antarctic

Telemedicine is a process and not a technology though it uses many aspects of technology (phonelines, internet, IT etc).
A representative of the BMA's IT Committee said about telemedicine " instead of at one time perhaps being simply expensive toys in the hands of a handful of GPs and specialists, it has the potential to become a useful part of the NHS. All of us at some point in our careers will be using telemedicine,"

Thus iIt may have started out as an innovation but is now being used in many different aspects of healthcare delivery and can improve efficiency and delivery.

Many clinicians now conduct part of their work over remote delivery using IT and telephony. Examples include

TeleCardiology
TeleDermatology
TeleFluoroscopy
TelePsychiatry
TeleRadiology
TeleUltrasound
Telepathology

Teleconferencing as a way of learning is also part of "telematics".

There are also career opportunities emerging - either as a significant part of a medical career or as a temporary or permanent career move from clinical work - within these high technology fields (such as software design, systems analysis, sales, consulting, academic posts etc).

If this very broad area is of interest to you - we can help you to define which of the many ways you could take this forwards in your own career via our Career Review Programme
