VTS career programme

Assisting in recruitment and retention of newly qualified GPs.

Career guidance has been traditionally provided somewhat ad hoc within the medical profession. Although this is improving, young doctors still harbour many career concerns and misconceptions about a career in general practice and particularly about whether they can carve the career they dreamed about when they joined medical school.

The aim of the VTS programme is to

      ·         show why they must take full responsibility for their career planning

      ·         provide some personalised feedback on career dreams

      ·         explain how to define career goals/plans based on those dreams

      ·         reveal how these can be integrated into general practice

      ·         underline how this process needs to become a lifelong habit

The programme consists of

     ·         A preparation questionnaire and flier

     ·         A one day workshop with “career laboratory”

     ·         A follow up email coaching session for each delegate (the individual emails their finalised considered career action plan for our comments and feedback).

Although the workshop can be run on its own – the feedback from these events has shown a desire in some people for a personalised discussion as follow up. If this is the case we recommend they join a Career Review Programme.

The doctors can be at any stage in their VTS training but most often have been early or mid way in their registrar year. Depending on the current recruitment issues we can advise at which stage the programme would suit your region. For example if your region is experiencing early drop out from schemes we would recommend an earlier introduction of the programme.

The programme could also be tailored for use as a recruitment tool into general practice VTS schemes - not so much as to increase applicant numbers  (as currently there seems to be to high numbers anyway ) but to assist the individuals in defining whether general practice really is right for them. It has also been run for established partners and non principles in order to renew and regnenerate their enthusiasm for their career.

The approximate cost for a programme with up to twelve doctors is three thousand pounds.
