IMG (international medical graduates)

Depending on your primary qualification and place of study - the GMC ( www.gmc-uk.org )would grant you provisional or full registration (ie with the General Medical council) although doctors from some countries (primarily those outside the EEC) are required to do some exams (eg PLAB and IELTS)

Despite much media attention on the shortage of doctors in the uk - there is much competitiveness for certain career areas. An article in the BMJ recently said that the average time an overseas non EU doctor takes to get a job in the uk eg after PLAB is six months of applications  and even for EU doctors this can take quite a while. Another article implied that perhaps as few as one in three of doctors arriving in the UK will obtain work here as doctors.

The British Medical Journal careers focus supplement (see www.bmj.com and click on current issue or past issues) all medical job vacancies in the uk.

If you read the articles below you will find some helpful information (most of which are to articles on the BMJ website) on employment prospects in the uk for IMGs
