F1/F2 years require career guidance. So do other grades. And common sense suggests that better career guidance will lead to happy, well placed doctors, in turn leading to happier, more efficient workplaces and to better patient care.
Q But what is the evidence for this? Q And who is giving career guidance? Q What consistency and quality can juniors expect? Q Who is trained in how to give it (and more importantly how not to)?
One deanery recently sent 100 “Career Guidance Essentials” distance learning packs (with two hours CPD) to key personnel in local Trusts. Less than one third of the questionnaires were completed and returned for accreditation.
Q Why did so few respond? Q Does training in career guidance matter? Q Can it be audited? Q How is career guidance training best integrated into medical education?
Career guidance essentials – but not that essential?…..is a report that tries to address some of these questions. It includes the feedback from those who did return their questionnaires - an overall collated summary of respondents views and comments – good and bad.
Within this information may be some ideas for working out how to forge quality, standardised, reproducible and sustainable career guidance in medicine as well as how to deliver basic career guidance training cost effectively.
